Reeling from the loss of their child, Lucy and Ira Bannon move into a remote house with the hope of starting over and putting the tragedy behind them. Everything seems to be getting better, until Lucy discovers the house is haunted, not by conventional ghosts, but characters from the pulpy sci-fi novel Ira is struggling to write. As she investigates the mysteries of the ghosts, she uncovers the sordid history of her own captivity, sex magic, and the realization that everything she knows comes from a story fed to her by Ira and some mysterious cult known as the Dark Matterists. Refusing to accept her role in the cult, Lucy fights to free herself from the reigns or torment and, ultimately, her captors. In her empowerment, she becomes a force others will come to worship.
